Starting from the south, the Venetian castle dominates on the edge of the capital, where you walk in through a tunnel. The Historical Archive of Kythira with documents from the 16th century and onwards is housed in the Command Post. It is located in the capital and includes findings of Prehistoric, Classical and the Venetian times.
Driving north you can visit the Byzantine Museum where you will find a collection of early Christian, Byzantine and post-Byzantine art (murals, paintings, metalwork and pottery, etc.) at the Temple of Ascension in Kato Livadi. Nearby is the Milapidea a special architectured school building of the English period, on a hill between “Fatsadika” and “Livadi”. Monasteries in Kythira with “Myrtidiotissa” and “Agia Moni” standing out in beauty and visitation.
Τhe admirable bridge of “Katouniou” with a height of 15 m, length of 110 m and with 13 vaulted arches in perfect symmetry, counts 180 years in the area of Livadi.
Centrally below the the traditional “Mylopotamos” village you will find “Fairy or Murdereress” waterfall , which enjoys an idyllic location amid the trees. Nearby you will see a series of abandoned water mills where you can swim through the improvised waterfalls-pools.
Also the settlement “Aroniadika”, walking through it’s alleys is a unique experience and has also been characterized as traditional from the Greek Ministry of Culture.
Towards the north, an authentic part of the island, the castle city “Paleochora”, which was captured and destroyed by the terrible pirate Barbarossa in 1537.
The impressive natural landscape as the ruins of the state, confirm the strong growth once experienced there. The exceptional natural beauty of the canyons “Tsakonas” and “Kakia Lagada” with carved in rocks churches, abundant running waters and the gentle pine trees. They’re worth the walk.
Coastal in Paleopolis near the village of “Avlaimonas” are the ruins of the Byzantine fortress of the old capital of the island. A short distance from the archaeological site Palaiopolis in Mount Saint George, enjoying a spectacular panoramic view, you can visit the Minoan peak sanctuary.
